…well there you go
No Mr Bond I Expect You To Die
They finally managed to kill James Bond. MGM Studios, the rights holders of the James Bond Franchize are 4 billion dollars in debt and looking for a buyer. They have just confirmed that the next Bond film has been cancelled, meaning that it will be a long time before we finally get to see if Bond catches that guy who gets away at the end of the last film.
I’m personally a huge fan of the films and was hoping that Daniel Craig had a few more left in him. With things the way they are I don’t expect to see him in another Bond film again. We can always hope, after all they did make more Red Dwarf, and that was rubbish.

Even though I was a bit surprised to read this news the other day, I’m not too terribly upset by it. I’ve loved all of the Bond films and they’ve been part of my life for as long as I remember.
I have not seen QOS yet, but I did watch Casino Royale and I must say I was disappointed with it. I felt they pushed Bond to he point of total seriousness and abandoned that little bit of camp that I found made the Bond films so likeable in the first place.
Hopefully they’ll be back one day. The powers that be should take a long hard look at past Bond efforts as to remember what it was that made them so special.

I too was sad to hear this news. I thought Casino Royale was a brilliant film, and while some people ragged on Quantum of Solace, I thought it was also quite good. It was a ballsy move to jump in with a direct continuation of the last movie. My main gripe about it was that it was too short. Only 90 mins compared to a more typical 120-130ish, and as a result, the pacing was simply too fast. We, the viewer, were not left with much room to breathe.
I found Daniel Craig an extremely talented Bond. The role was well crafted and he brought a cool charm, as well as a gruffness, that put a very different spin on the character. Craig was not nearly as clean-cut and suave as previous Bonds. I would have to say that CR and QoS were the first Bond films I saw were I was completely convinced of Bond’s competence.
That’s not to disparage the other actors, they all had their strengths, but this last iteration really gave me a sense of his ability to get things done and hold his own a variety of situations.
Now the odds of seeing how that character grows have fallen, essentially, to zero. What a shame.

It hasn’t been cancelled. Just permanently suspended. Once someone figures out MGM’s financial woes, I’m sure this will be the first film to go back on the production line.
Hey, you never know, Rob Lowe might buy MGM next week.

My Dad will be disappointed, he is a huge Bond fan. Hopefully they will get things straight.

This whole MGM thing is really pissing me off. First is was the RoboCop reboot with Darren Aronofsky, then the Hobbit under Del Torro, now they can’t get a Bond film made with Sam bloody Mendes? Yet they found the money to make Pink Panther 2 last year. Well done there. A fine investment indeed.
This studio has created some of the seminal works in the history of film and they now own some great properties and can’t get them developed. It’s sad, but they should just sell off the rights to stuff like Bond, RoboCop and The Hobbit and the let the productions continue. They obviously should no longer be in the movie making business.
Nice site Rich.
