It doesn’t seem like all that long ago since we swore off Star Trek all together. You see, it’s actually quite hard to do these shows after a while. One of the problems that all long running show have to deal with is the limited scope of the subject matter. Yes, most of us like to talk about Star Trek from time to time. Clearly I’m talking to the Make It So listeners amongst you. But having to talk about it every week, and be funny and interesting, and attempt to say something that hasn’t been said before, is a very difficult thing to do. Star Trek is something that fans have been asking about for 50 years, so it’s fair to say that anything that could be said, has been said.
However, Star Trek seems to have an interesting property that most shows don’t have. We’ve found that it is possible to completely emerge yourself in Trek, to the point of almost hating it, have some time off, and come back to it later. I’m speaking for myself here, but I’ve seen similar behaviour in Will and Mike. It seems to take about a year before the effects of long term podcasting wear off, but sooner or later you find yourself catching the end of a Voyager episode on TV, and before you know it, you’re working your way through the DVD collection that make your girlfriend roll her eyes.
I’ve already said publicly that Make It So is coming back soon, but we also have our movie special series, and we’ve been working on both. No doubt you heard about what I’m now calling “The Generations Incident” in which we unknowingly re-recorded a movie commentary, twice, and a whole discussion show along with it. A word to the wise, when you record your next instalment of an audio show series, really make sure you know which episode you did last. That was tough to go through. Nothing hurts more than falling down right after picking yourself up.
Never the less, I find myself not just prepared to record more Make It So, but actually looking forward to it. I’m even looking forward to recording the Insurrection movie special. It’s a nice feeling.
We just completed our First Contact movie special, and it was lots of fun to do, although I must admit I was slightly preoccupied with worry about driving home through the snow. Check it out in our stre.
